What is Pilates?

The Pilates method uses low-impact exercises to strengthen muscles, improve posture, and increase flexibility. Although Pilates focuses on strengthening your core muscles, your whole body can reap the benefits of the various exercises. You can become more aware of how your body functions and moves during everyday activities.

Pilates Rehab Charleston, SC

You have probably heard of Pilates workouts and classes to help you get stronger, more flexible, and improve your overall fitness. Physical therapists also use this popular full-body exercise method to help people recover and rehab some injuries and conditions. At Coastal Movement Specialists, we are pleased to now offer one-on-one private reformer Pilates sessions and small group classes!

What is Reformer Pilates?

You can do Pilates on a mat or a machine known as a reformer. The reformer makes it possible to add resistance to various exercises to enhance muscular strength and endurance. Reformer Pilates enables you to more effectively improve your range of motion that is essential in rehabilitating many conditions.

What Conditions Benefit from Pilates Rehab?

Pilates rehab is particularly effective in treating conditions created by muscle imbalances, which are so common today. Sedentary lifestyles like sitting at a desk and using a computer can create painful conditions that Pilates rehab can improve. Some of these conditions include:

  • Low back pain

  • Poor posture

  • Neck pain

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Knee pain

How Does Pilates Help?

Pilates strengthens the deep muscles of your core to make you more agile and stable. Pilates exercises correct alignment issues to improve posture and decrease unnecessary strain on your spine.

Pilates also helps you breathe better. Poor breathing habits are common and can contribute to low energy levels, poor posture, and increased stress. Pilates focuses on your diaphragm and oblique abdominal muscles. These help you breathe more effectively to receive the maximum benefit of each exercise and enhance the overall quality of your life.

Pilates Rehab vs Traditional Pilates

While you can receive many benefits from a Pilates workout or taking a traditional Pilates class, these do not aim to improve an imbalance or heal an injury. Pilates rehab is distinctively different and taught by someone with physical therapy training.

Before beginning rehab with us, you will receive a thorough assessment of your injury or condition from a trained physical therapist. You will also receive a customized Pilates exercise plan to help you recover and prevent future recurrences of pain and impaired function.
