What is Pilates?

The Pilates method uses low-impact exercises to strengthen muscles, improve posture, and increase flexibility. The reformer and other equipment allow your whole body to benefit from controlled, full-range movements. Through Pilates, you can also become more aware of how your body functions and moves during everyday activities.

Pilates Rehab Charleston, SC

Pilates is well-known for building strength, flexibility, and overall fitness—but it’s also a powerful tool for recovery and rehabilitation. At Coastal Movement Specialists, our therapists integrate Pilates into personalized programs to support healing, restore function, and improve movement. We’re excited to offer one-on-one private reformer Pilates sessions as well as small group classes—so you can experience the benefits in a way that fits your needs.

What is Reformer Pilates?

You can do Pilates on a mat or a machine known as a reformer. The reformer makes it possible to add resistance to various exercises to enhance muscular strength and endurance. Reformer Pilates enables you to more effectively improve your range of motion that is essential in rehabilitating many conditions.

What Conditions Benefit from Pilates Rehab?

Pilates-based rehabilitation is especially effective for addressing muscle imbalances—one of the most common causes of pain and dysfunction today. Sedentary lifestyles, such as prolonged sitting and computer use, often contribute to these issues. Pilates rehab can help improve strength, alignment, and movement patterns to reduce pain and restore function.

  • Low back pain

  • Poor posture

  • Neck pain

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Knee pain

How Does Pilates Help?

Pilates strengthens the deep muscles of your core to make you more agile and stable. Pilates exercises correct alignment issues to improve posture and decrease unnecessary strain on your spine.

Pilates also helps you breathe better. Poor breathing habits are common and can contribute to low energy levels, poor posture, and increased stress. Pilates focuses on your diaphragm and oblique abdominal muscles. These help you breathe more effectively to receive the maximum benefit of each exercise and enhance the overall quality of your life.

Pilates Rehab vs Traditional Pilates

While you can receive many benefits from a Pilates workout or taking a traditional Pilates class, these do not aim to improve an imbalance or heal an injury. Pilates rehab is distinctively different and taught by someone with therapy training.

Before starting Pilates, your therapist will review your goals and any injuries to determine needed modifications and areas of focus. In private sessions, you’ll receive a customized exercise plan designed to aid recovery and prevent future pain. When using the reformer in your therapy or pilates sessions, your therapist will closely monitor your form and guide you through targeted Pilates movements to meet your goals.
